Minor PAN Card: Why It’s Important and How to Apply

Financial planning for children often begins early, whether through investments, savings accounts, or insurance. A crucial document that enables these steps is the Minor PAN Card. Since minors cannot apply themselves, parents or legal guardians must take responsibility for obtaining it.

Why a Minor PAN Card Is Necessary

A Minor PAN Card may be required in several situations:

  • Investing in mutual funds or fixed deposits in a child’s name
  • Opening a bank account for a minor
  • Making a child a nominee in investments or insurance policies
  • If the child earns income independently, a PAN card becomes mandatory

Who Can Apply?

Only a parent or legal guardian can apply for a Minor PAN Card. Applications can be submitted both online and offline.

How to Apply Online

1.     Visit the official NSDL website.

2.     Select Form 49A and read the instructions carefully.

3.     Fill in the minor’s personal details and guardian information.

4.     Upload the minor’s age proof and guardian’s identity/address documents.

5.     Provide the guardian’s signature.

6.     Pay the application fee and submit the form.

7.     Use the receipt number to track the application status.

8.     The PAN card is delivered within ~15 days after verification.

How to Apply Offline

1.     Download Form 49A from the NSDL website.

2.     Fill out the form correctly.

3.     Attach two passport‑size photographs of the child.

4.     Submit the form with required documents and fee at the nearest NSDL office.

5.     After verification, the PAN card is sent to the registered address.

Documents Required

  • Minor’s age proof
  • Parent/guardian’s identity and address proof (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, ration card, driving license, etc.)
  • Address proof options: Aadhaar, post office passbook, property registration papers, or residence proof

Important Rules

  • A Minor PAN Card does not carry the child’s photo or signature, so it cannot serve as identity proof.
  • Once the minor turns 18, they must update their PAN card with photo and signature through a fresh application.
